The Evolution of Display Systems
Building on the Past, Meeting Challenges in the Present, Preparing for the Future

Abstract
The keynote address will track the evolution of display technology from the early days of CRTs, oil-film light valves, and WAC windows to the high fidelity systems being delivered today. The presentation will describe how current display technology was developed in response to the changing focus on visual systems – from being IG-centric, to database-centric, to display-centric which reflects the current state of the market. Today’s display systems will be described in greater depth from the perspective of how suppliers are challenged to meet the requirements of customers who demand higher performance at lower cost. This is especially relevant and important as commercial simulation markets become more competitive and as worldwide defense spending declines. Whereas current systems still fall short of the ideal, exciting advances in projection technology, screen technology, and auto alignment systems are bringing us closer to a future when customers will confuse virtual and real worlds and when more and more training can be moved to the simulator. A brief glimpse into these advances and a vision for the future will be presented. With eye-limited resolution, increasing levels of brightness and contrast, greater deployability, and much lower life cycle cost, customers of the future will be delighted with what our industry can deliver.
